BAEL Players of the Week: July 12 & 13
Jake McCallum | 2025 | INF | Calgary Bucks | Bethany Lutheran College
After a slow start to the year for McCallum, his bat has really come to life the last 9 games, collecting 14 hits over that span. He was a major contributor this weekend in the Bucks sweep over the Twins, going 6 for 11 with 3 walks, 4 runs and 2 RBIs. In his 5-foot-11, 190-pound frame, in which he can consistently elevate to his pull-side, there’s some untapped power that will play well with his current hit tool. With a season slash line of .341/.462/.376, the Bethany Lutheran College commit is getting hot at the right time as we near BAEL Provincials.
Matthew Schneider | 2025 | OF/RHP | St. Albert Cardinals | Edmonton Collegiate
The Edmonton Collegiate commit had one of the most productive weekends we’ve seen this year which played a major role in the Cardinals sweep over the Rangers. He went 7 for 11 at the dish with 2 doubles, 1 triple, and 11 RBIs. On the mound, he threw a complete game, giving up just 2 ERs, walking 1, and striking out 7 in game 2 on Saturday. Schneider's ability to use the entire field and put the barrel on the ball is what has set him apart. He has 13 extra base hits on the year, 5 of which are triples, while possessing plate discipline and barrel control, totaling just 8 strikeouts in 117 plate appearances. His impact can be seen on the mound as well, with a 3.94 ERA over 49.2 IP this year. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound two-way player is a contributor the Cardinals need at his best if they want to go on a deep run at Provincials.
Dzeo McNaughton | 2027 | OF | Parkland Twins | Uncommitted
Despite being a first-year player in the BAEL, McNaughton has been one of Parkland's biggest contributors at the dish this season. He went 4 for 10 this past weekend and possesses a .378/.446/.422 slash line over 101 plate appearances, while striking out just 8 times. At 5-foot-10, 150-pounds, there’s room to fill out his frame that will pair well with his current ability to put the bat on the ball. As he continues to refine his approach at the plate and add to his current frame, McNaughton will be a 2027 worth a follow in the years to come.
Isaac Jones | 2025 | OF | Sherwood Park Dukes | Uncommitted
During a series in which the Dukes needed to make a push to keep their hopes of staying in the BAEL alive, Isaac Jones had his best weekend of the year. He went 7 for 10 with 3 triples, 4 walks, 7 runs, and 4 RBIs. There’s some bat speed in his swing and he has speed on bases that make him a threat when the defense isn’t on their toes. A prime example of that is when he stole home on a back-pick at first base a couple weekends ago. Although it can look unorthodox at times, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder can have an impact at the dish that the Dukes will need to remain in the BAEL and secure their spot Provincials.
Tavin Anderson | 2026 | LHP/OF | Sherwood Park Dukes | Uncommitted
Anderson, who was a member of Team Alberta at the Western Canadian Prospect Series last fall, has as much upside as any arm currently in the BAEL. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound LHP has a low-effort, repeatable delivery with ample amount of room to add strength and fill out his frame. He was dominant on the mound this past weekend against the Cubs, giving up just 1 ER and 2 hits over 6 strong innings. He added 4 hits at the plate with 2 of them being triples. The fastball has been up into the low-80s and mixes in an effective curveball with depth that can generate in-zone swing and miss, and chase when located below the zone. The uncommitted 2026 has also seen 3 innings with the Energy City Cactus Rats of the WCBL in which he’s allowed just 1 hit and no runs. Anderson is an exciting arm worth a follow as he nears the start of his senior season.
